Alternatives to PPC

In this article I will give you my top ten list of alternative's to pay per click search engines and will explain why they are not very effective. The number one reason PPC search engines are not effective is because of commercial competition. I used to sell DVD's on Google Adwords and I held the number one position for many keywords. If you have a unique product that is in demand you could possibly do quite well, but many times no matter what the market is, there is intense competition.

If you live in the United States you can easily be out-bid by somebody who is willing to take a smaller profit on the same product. The reason people from other countries do this is because the dollar they make off a particular product goes a lot further where they live. This same thing happens on ebay. Americans aren't willing to work for five dollars a day and spend two hundred dollars on a Adwords account without any guarentee that it will pay off. Cost per click for some items can cost as much as $16.00. That hurts!

Here is my top ten alternatives (based on effectiveness and price:

1. The number one goal is to get listed in search engines without paying per click. This can be a tedious dead end for alot of people. Trying to figure out how to optimize your website can be a hassle. However there are alternatives to the big three search engines. There are many smaller search engines who are more likely to list your site. www.warprocket.com for example has a 99% acceptance rate.

2. Using auto surf programs can increase your Alexa rank. I have searched all over the web and tried many of these programs. If you have a broadband connection you can auto surf on several auto hit sites while you sleep. The best ones I have found have been Autohits.dk, brastart.us, ecashtraffic.com, and sprutt.com
3. Get other sites to link to your site. This can be great for sites that are set up like directories, but not very feasable for most website owners. Think about some free service you can provide in exchange for others to link to your site. If not join a link exchange or buy advertising. Adbrite.com is the best place to buy links on the internet that I know of.
4. Sell on Ebay. Can be effective in any area as long as you have the money to feature your auctions. To feature an auction will cost a minumum of $20. If you don't feature it there is a good change you your auction will get lost in all of the other auctions going on. Even if you feature an auction it is most viewable the first and last few days of your auction. You may or may not sell anything. In my experience when you find something that works, stick to it, which is only about 10% of the time.
5. Television advertisement. Regional and local television commercials can cost as low as $1 (based on demand). More than likely it will cost more than that. But during off hours it is very common to get a commercial for around $250. This one reaches a large market and is very effective. Only draw back is you will need to produce a commerical and have a legitimate business.
6. Join a major affiliate program. This is an expensive yet effective way to advertise. The two largest companies are ClickBank and Commission Junction. Commission Junction for example has a total start up cost of around five thousand dollars.
7. Advertise on High Traffic sites. Expensive, but effective.
8. Email marketing. Meduim effectiveness. Yahoo has a good email marketing program. Yahoo won't send your email to a junk box if it is a Yahoo email account. Other services might get a 1% response since the email will be seen as junk in most cases. Plus in the state of California it is illegal to spam. Thats funny.
9. Radio. Not very effective and very expensive. Television is cheaper. It is only a good thing if your already doing good and want to expand your product brand. 10. Newspapers. To reach a really large number of readers you would have to invest thousands of dollars. However with the right product it could be profitable.
10. Newspapers. Believe it not this is very expensive. Sure it might cost $20 to have a classified ad in your local paper. But a national campaign will cost thousands of dollars. Would be good for branding if you had alot of money to buy ad space, not just classifieds. I reviewed a classifieds campaign using a nationwide network it was nearly $15,000.
